OFD wouldn’t be here today if it weren’t for our involvement with the United States government. One of our first business ventures involved providing 1.8 million meals to the U.S. military in the mid 1960s. This achievement paved the way for future government contracts for years to come.
OFD Foods, LLC is the leading supplier of freeze dried food to the United States Military. Our foods can be packaged to feed anywhere from one person to fifty people. The shelf life ranges from three to thirty years depending on packaging and customer needs.
Today OFD continues to manufacture products for the military including:
- Unitized Group Ration A (UGR-A)
- Unitized Group Ration, Heat & Serve (UGR-H&S)
- We provide some components of Meal, Ready-to-Eat (MRE)
- Meal, Cold Weather MCW – Formerly known as Long Range Patrol (LRP)
The B, H&S, MCW, and LRP rations are contracted directly with DLA-Troop Support (formally known as DSCP). The other rations are manufactured by OFD for other government suppliers who assemble the OFD components with other items to make the finished rations for the military.
During Desert Shield/Desert Storm, OFD Foods, LLC produced over 6.5 million #10 cans of meat items. These consisted of pork chops, cooked diced chicken, and diced beef. We also produced 20 million individual wrapped hamburger buns and 16,000,000 fruit bars (strawberry, peach, pear, mixed fruit).
In the 1960s, we began exploring the idea of taking our freeze-dried food products to outer space. We started by supplying freeze-dried food for simulated space missions and eventually successfully sent our products into space on the Apollo missions, Skylab and joint U.S.-Russian space ventures.
