CONTRACT R&D SERVICES

Oregon Freeze Dry is a pioneer and the world leader in the research and application of low-temperature, low-pressure preservation of materials. Since 1963, we have developed innovative solutions to meet the specific product requirements and applications of our customers.

Speed-to-Market with Oregon Freeze Dry, Inc

Speed-to-Market, a term often used and rarely realized. Why? The total cost to execute from concept to commercialized prototypes is often underestimated when you undertake all tasks in-house.

If your product needs preservation of form or functionality, OFD's Advanced & Specialty Products Contract Services have experience in successfully applying low temperature, low pressure drying for many classes of products. You may take advantage of our experience in applying lyophilization technology and packaging expertise to a wide variety of industrial categories including food, specialty chemicals, biotechnology, medical devices, and pharmaceuticals.

Our process development team has demonstrated the ability to convert solutions, emulsions, or suspensions to nano particles, wound dressings, quick-dissolving tablets, and slow-dissolving oral patches. Our broad industrial experience brings a unique perspective to collaborative problem solving and commercialization. Combined with North America's largest bulk lyophilization capacity for both food grade (HACCP) and cGMP materials, OFD becomes an immediate extension of your R&D and Production Team.

We offer confidential Contract Research & Development services that focus on your finished product attributes and the identification of the critical control parameters specific to your raw material(s). The basic steps we follow when evaluating your material(s) are as follows:

    1. Define critical control points for a specific material.
    2. Provide concept prototypes for physical evaluation and commercial scale cost estimate.
    3. Define Scale-up and validation protocols and samples.
    4. Produce clinical or focus group quantities.
    5. Produce commercial quantities to confirm market size and economics.
    6. Execute commercial scale-up at OFD or at your site with technology transfer.

Today, more than ever, it is important to efficiently use available capital. What could you save if together we rapidly took your product from raw material through scale-up in 1 - 3 months, with many products able to be finished within weeks?

Regulatory Information:

The Contract R & D facilities are capable of operating under a variety of regulatory requirements. We are fully registered with FDA, EPA, DEA, and USDA-APHIS. We are able to quote all development work under full cGMP to food grade (HACCP).

We are committed to strict quality control. Utilizing cGMP procedure, our highly trained staff continuously monitors every stage of processing and packaging. We believe in close collaboration with all customers in developing product specific protocols that meet both internal and requlatory requirements.

Delivery System Capabilities: (grams - kilograms)

We are creative in adapting our delivery system technology to meet your product requirements. Proven developmental delivery systems include the following:

  • Wound Dressings
  • Lyophilizied Pastilles (Bulk)
  • Quick Dissolving Tablets
  • Slow Dissolving Oral Patch
  • Traditional Lyophilized Granule or Powder (Bulk)

We also have experience applying our creative solutions to Chemicals, Biotechnology, Medical Devices, Pharmaceuticals, and Nutraceuticals. A brief summary follows.

CHEMICALS
We freeze-dry specialty and pharmaceutical chemicals out of aqueous solutions and suspensions, water / alcohol mixtures, and hydrocarbons. Significant economic benefits can be realized through improvements in dispersibility, surface area, retention of functional morphology, primary particle size, and yield.

MEDICAL DEVICES
In the medical realm, we have applied our technology to collagen, hydrogel, and polymeric materials to create a lyophilized structure that serves as delivery platform. Wound dressings are one example of this.

BIOTECHNOLOGY / NUTRACEUTICALS
We are a leader in the preservation of stable microbes, including bacteria and viable fungi. We also process enzymes and botanical extracts.

PHARMACEUTICALS
We have successfully commercialized bulk lyophiliztion of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and excipients, and lyophilized unit dosage formats.

Demonstrated Applications:

Bulk Intermediates   Bulk Actives (Controlled)
Low Tg Polymers   Catalysts
Propellants   Blood Fractions
Probiotic Microbials   Bacteriostats
Microbial-based Agricultural Biopesticides   Dietary Supplements
Wound Dressings
  • Phytonutrient Data (Requires Flash Player)
  • Non-Stick wound-dressing
  •   High Molecular Weight Alcohols
Fixed Volatile Flavors   Pigments and Dyes
    Therapeutic Peptides

    Commercialized Process Examples:

We invite you to learn more about the capabilities of our low-temperature, low-pressure drying technology. We would be pleased to visit your site to meet with your process or product development staff. During our presentations, we demonstrate how the technology can be manipulated to preserve the form and functionality of materials, and we discuss the economics of the various process parameters associated with development and commercial production. We also invite you to visit our Albany, Oregon headquarters, where we encourage potential customers to audit our facilities, methods, and practices.
